about

”Postcards of Nostalgia” sonically re-imagines the solo acoustic piano. It playfully explores the “sounds between the notes”.

Inspired by LaMonte Young and John Cage and sounding like Eve Risser and Benoît Delbecq, Choboter uses a newly invented tuning system, magnetic preparations and ethereal electronics to evoke subliminal landscapes between post-jazz, ambient electronic and Balinese Gamelan music.

The album invites one to reflect into the deep past whether on a personal or collective scale.

On a personal level, the music reflects on Choboter’s travels to places like Chennai, (studying oral traditions of South Indian Classical Music) Delphi, (explorations into myths of ancient Greece) and the Dordogne Valley (delving into palaeolithic cave art of southern France). These impressions have been traversed in wakeful experiences, dreaming, literature and the liminal psychological planes in between. Stored as memories, they manifest as postcards of nostalgia, that Choboter carries always.

On a collective scale, “Postcards of Nostalgia” might describe the awe- inspiring Upper Palaeolithic cave art. Poet Clayton Eshleman uses the phrase to refer to some kind of eternal longing for something that we know we have lost. A loss of some aspects of an animal nature. The irreversible gain of consciousness, or reflection upon ourselves, and a com- pensatory need for imaginative creativity. An expression toward a need for reconnection, creativity must have helped us survive. It must continue to help us survive. But creativity requires evolution and renewal.
